Abstract
Public expenditure on consumption and transfers to households has increased dramatically in Sweden; from 33 per cent of GDP in 1970 to 52 per cent in 1992. The national pension system more than doubled in relation to GDP during the period, from 5 per cent to 12, thus being one of the most important factors underlying this expansion. Pensioners1 standards have been significantly improved, and pensioners collectively are today one of the groups with the lowest proportion of poor. The national pension system is the most important means of support for pensioners. This chapter gives a description of this system, its history and its design.
