Immigration and Economic Change

Part of the book series: Population Economics ((POPULATION))

Abstract

By the beginning of the 1930s the wave of emigration to America had abated, and Sweden turned from a country of emigration into one of immigration. Large-scale immigration has been taking place all through the postwar period. An average of 37 000 persons per year have immigrated, which has resulted in there being 1.4 million people of foreign origin in Sweden (see Diagram 1).1 This means that Sweden is one of the most heavily immigrant-populated countries in Europe. Only Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland have a higher proportion of foreign citizens than Sweden.2
