Radical Concentration Measurements in Hydrocarbon Diffusion Flames

  • Chapter
Book cover Soot Formation in Combustion

Abstract

Two investigations of radical concentrations in hydrocarbon diffusion flames are discussed: (1) a comparison of experimental measurements on OH, H atom, O atom, CH, and CH3 with detailed computations of flame structure in a laminar, CH4/air flame and (2) new measurements of OH concentrations in the soot oxidation region of both CH4/air and C2H4/air diffusion flames. For the comparison study the concentration profiles have been plotted in terms of the local mixture fraction, after matching the scalar dissipation rate at the stoichiometric surface. The overall agreement in the shape and location of the profiles is best for the major radicals OH, H atom, and O atom, but less satisfactory for the hydrocarbon radicals. For the OH measurements in the soot oxidation region, profile data have been successfully obtained in the presence of significant amounts of soot. These quantitative OH concentrations will help test and guide the development of soot formation models, all of which currently must rely upon calculated or assumed values.
