Abstract

The mass growth of charged soot particles was studied in low pressure premixed flat flames of acetylene and oxygen burning with C/O ratios ranging between 0.95 and 1.2. A particle mass spectrometer (PMS) was used to determine the size distribution of charged particles. It extracts a molecular beam from the flame gases and allows to determine the particle kinetic energy as well as the particle velocity thus providing a direct measure of the particle mass m P/z e. From different flames the growth behaviour of singly charged soot particles in the mass range 0.5·10−20 g ≤ m P ≤ 50·10−20 g was measured without interference by particle coagulation. The obtained data could be interpreted in terms of a specific mass growth rate.
