Abstract
The biology of epithelial cancer of the ovary (the most common form of ovarian cancer) has three remarkable features. First, greater incidence is related to greater numbers of years of ovulation, and the use of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) is associated with a marked decrease in risk for this cancer. Second, patients are usually diagnosed with disease that has spread extensively throughout the abdomen and pelvis, primarily through intraperitoneal implantation. Third, this cancer is unusual because non-curative, tumor volume-reducing (debulking) surgery appears to have a favorable impact on survival.
