Part of the book series: Telecommunications ((TELECOMMUNICATI,volume 19))

Abstract

Digital Television has become one of the most rapidly growing areas in the field of information technology during the last years. This is demonstrated by the many cable and satellite systems which are under development in the U.S.A. and by the enormous participation in the European DVB project, with about 100 signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding. During the years 1994 and 1995 several satellite and cable systems will become operational in the U.S. offering several hundreds of TV channels locally (by cable) or nation-wide (by satellite). The same development will occur in Europe, where at least SES-ASTRA will launch its le satellite in 1995 offering about 100 TV channels. European cable operators will have to follow this development rather quickly due to reasons of competition.
