Peripheral Communication of the Facial Nerve at the Angle of the Mouth
The detailed, peripheral locations of the facial nerve communications with the terminal branches of the trigeminal nerve have not been described thoroughly in anatomical textbooks. In a percentage of clinical cases, there is evidence of functional recovery of portions of the facial musculature following surgical section of the main trunk of the facial nerve. For example, there can be spontaneous recovery of function near the angle of the mouth.
