Abstract
The stability of a laminar separation bubble caused by a sudden decrease of the free stream velocity along a flat-plate is investigated by means of Direct Numerical Simulations based on the complete 3-D Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible unsteady flow and on primary and secondary stability theory. Four cases with different 2-D and 3-D disturbance development are investigated, (i) a linear case, (ii) and (iii) two cases with secondary instability (subharmonic and fundamental resonance), and (iv) a 3-D nonlinear case (oblique breakdown). Due to the strong (mainly primary) amplification of 2-D and 3-D waves in the bubble, secondary instability is hard to identify and plays only a minor role. The oblique breakdown, however yields strong amplification of higher harmonics and a nonlinearly saturated regime with reasonable turbulent mean-flow characteristics.
