Abstract

We report the time-resolved observation of the infrared laser induced dissociation of C2H4SO, (CH3)2SO and (CD3)2SO after IR-multiphoton excitation of the SO chromophore at waven bers around 1080 cm−1. The CO2 laser pulse lengths and time resolution of the detection scheme are both between 1 and 5 ns, also longer for some experiments. The collisionless IR-photochemical main primary products have been shown to be SO(3) in all molecules together with C2H4 for C2H4SO and CH3 for (CH3)2SO. For C2H4SO unimolecular decay constants of k ≅ 107 to 108 s−1 after excitation above threshold are obtained. The dissociation process of (CH3)2SO can be described by a two-step mechanism with the intermediate CH3SO.
