Abstract
A mixture of 2,4-pentanedione (10 g=10.3 ml, 100 mmol), ethanol (15 ml) and water (15 ml) is heated under reflux and aminoguanidine nitrate (13.7 g, 100 mmol) is added in small portions. The solution is heated to reflux for two more hours, then allowed to cool to room temperature. Next day the crystals which separated are collected on a filter, washed with ether and dried in air. Addition of ether to the filtrate yields additional crops. The crude material (about 16 g) is recrystallized from hot ethanol; 1-guanyl-3,5-dimethyl-pyrazol nitrate (12.9 g, 64%) melts at 166–168 °C.
