Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of late-life intellectual impairment. It accounts for 60 to 70% of the cases of dementia. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease increases logarithmically with age reaching 45% for individuals who are in their ninth decade. The same disease occurs at an earlier age in persons with familial Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome.
