Fibromatosis in Macaques Infected with Type D Retroviruses

Abstract

The two anatomic locations of these lesions led to the designations retroperitoneal and subcutaneous fibromatosis. The course of the disease also occurs in two forms: localized and progressive. In the localized form, a nodular or multinodular proliferation of fibromatous tissue is found beneath the peritoneum at the mesenteric attachment of the ileocecal junction and/or adjacent lymph nodes (Fig. 46). These lesions vary from 1 to 4 cm in diameter, are very firm and pale, and resist cutting. Most localized lesions remain at one site but some become progressive, particularly in monkeys that manifest simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (SAIDS) (Giddens et al. 1985; Tsai et al. 1985a,b, 1986). In a few affected monkeys the localized lesions undergo spontaneous regression.
