Dynamics of Nonequilibrium THz Phonons in Single-Crystal Ruby Fibers

Abstract

In phonon dynamics in thin single-crystal fibers the role of phonon-interface interactions has to be accentuated. In experiments at LHT (see also [1]) the oriented single crystal fibers of 0.02 at.% ruby (diameter D =0.4 mm, length L=20 mm) grown by laser heated pedestal growth method [2] were used. Monochromatic 29 cm−1 phonons were detected using the R2 fluorescence of Cr9+ [3] from small volume (d) excited by a cw Ar laser.
