Abstract

A 72-year-old man visited a chiropractor for midthoracic back pain. After “alignment” therapy, his back pain worsened and numbness in his lower extremities caused him to enter an emergency room at which time a compression fracture of a T6 with an epidural mass from T5–T7 was discovered. He also had intermittent urinary retention which was attributed to a large prostate gland. A laminectomy at T5 — T6 demonstrated plasma cell myeloma. Postoperatively, he sustained a gastric perforation necessitating a laparotomy. Postoperatively, his leg weakness did not change, his back pain was lessened, his T6 sensory level had disappeared, but he was on nasal O2 (history of significant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD).
