Abstract
Using picosecond transient Raman spectroscopy, we observe mode specific, solvent dependent variations in the S1 spectrum of trans-stilbene. We attribute the changes in the spectra, in part, to vibrational relaxation via resonance energy exchange, and, in part, to multidimensional isomerization from the excited state. We suggest that the olefin-phenyl torsional motions are strongly coupled to the relaxation pathways.
