Summary
Speckle photography is a powerful technique for nondestructive and non-contact measurement of in-plane surface deformation fields. Here it has been used to study residual deformations in butt-welded steel plates, time dependent deformations in wood due to drying and the deformation in the vinicity of the contact between a steel roller and plate. The last example is the result of a simulation of a loaded roller bearing. The development of CCD arrays shows promise for the construction of an all electronic system for the measurement of displacement fields.
