Abstract

This paper reviews recent results on material removal for milling with laser radiation. The purpose of the basic investigations was to get general datas of the removal process using CO2-and Nd:YAG-laser radiation. The influence of different beam and process parameters on the removal process was investigated. In comparison to alternative processes high material removal rates have been attained using CO2-laser radiation. The machining with solid-state lasers allowes very good surface qualities. The material removal on steel imposes some characteristic limitations as burrs and slag on the workpiece surface while using oxygene. The application of inert assistant gases like helium and the optimisation of working parameters leads to better results, but lower removal rates.
