Tumours of the Kidney

  • Chapter
Cancer in Children

Part of the book series: UICC International Union Against Cancer ((1360))

Abstract

This chapter discusses malignant tumours of the kidney; it therefore excludes the subject of benign renal tumours, which are principally cystic lesions and require surgery only when they are unilateral. The malignant tumours consist almost exclusively of nephroblastoma, or Wilms’ tumour, and the substance of this chapter is devoted to this type of tumour. Other renal neoplasms that may be observed in children are considered briefly in a final section; these include clear-cell sarcoma, malignant rhabdoid sarcoma of the kidney and renal-cell carcinoma of the adult type.
