Abstract
Clinical observations have been a useful source of data on the epidemiology and aetiology of childhood neoplasms. In many countries, a, small number of highly specialized institutions treat most childhood cancer types, so that some estimates of occurrence, although subject to selection bias, can be made from their files. In addition, given the rarity of childhood cancers, associations relevant to aetiology have been identified through small series of clinical observations of the simultaneous presence of other equally rare conditions, such as congenital malformations in the same individual or the same cancer in other members of the family.
