Abstract

The proximity of the superconducting state to the antiferromagnetic state makes the problem of spin fluctuations one of the central issues in exploring the mechanism of high T c superconductivity. The experimental results of the magnetic spin excitations probed through nuclear magnetic relaxation (NMR) and neutron scattering are discussed with special emphasis on the existence of the apparent gap in the excitation spectrum (spin gap), and its possible explanation is proposed based on the mean field theory for the t – J model.
