Abstract

The optical spectra of the undoped CuO2 planes in the parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors are dominated by the electronic excitations across the Cu3d-O2p charge-transfer gap. Doping carriers, either electrons or holes, into the CuO2 plane drastically changes the spectrum by transferring the spectral weight of the change-transfer excitation to the löwer energy excitations. This gives rise to a unique electronic structure of high-Tc superconductors.
