Eine Herzinsuffizienz ist durch das Unvermögen des Herzens als globales Pumporgan gekennzeichnet, eine ausreichende nutritive Organdurchblutung für die kardialen und extrakardialen Strombahngebiete aufrechtzuerhalten. Ätiologisch kommen koronare, myokardiale und extrakardiale Ursachen in Betracht, am häufigsten hypertensive und ischämische Herzerkrankungen sowie primäre und sekundäre Kardiomyopathien.
