Abstract

More than thirty years have passed since the first paper on the finite element method which could be referred to as the beginning of the method as it is now known. Numerous papers and books have been written on this subject. The method has found practical application in different fields of engineering. However, there still remains the question: ‘What is the method essentially, what is it based on, how should the method be understood?’
