Medawar [92, 93, 94] erkannte als erster, daß das Schicksal übertragenen Fremdgewebes von immunologischen Abstoßungsreaktionen abhängig ist, und Billingham and Brent et al. [16] konnten 1956 klären, daß diese Abstoßungsreaktionen vom Grad der genetischen Differenz zwischen Spender und Empfänger, d.h. vom Histoinkompatibilitätsgrad abhängen.
