Abstract

IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) is the European project for and improved infrared atmospheric sounder, a parallel project to the US AIRS (Atmospheric Infra Red Sounder). Both projects derive from the original concepts put forward in the US in the early 80’s and supported by the development of airborne instruments such as AMTS (Advanced Moisture and Temperature Sounder) and HIS (High-resolution Interferometer Sounder). In Europe, the wait-and-see attitude was prevailing till a few years ago; but, when ESA and, afterwards, EUMETSAT, started to plan for a European contribution to the overall polar-orbiting satellite system, the scientific and operational communities undertook a transition to an active participation in this development, which is felt as the most important improvement in the near future for operational satellite meteorology.
