Postoperative Radiotherapy and the Pattern of Distant Spread in Breast Cancer

  • Chapter
Non-Disseminated Breast Cancer

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Postoperative radiotherapy (RT) has been widely used in the treatment of breast cancer since the inception of RT, and a marked reduction in the incidence of local recurrences has been observed in all studies. This finding demonstrates the eflfect of irradiation on residual neoplastic tissue (Tubiana and Sarrazin 1987). However, the impact of this treatment on long-term survival remains controversial and there is a large discrepancy between the highly eflective local treatment and the somewhat modest gain in total survival (Tubiana et al. 1986).
