Abstract
I began this book by describing some aspects of experiencing an alien culture. I hope that this beginning will be considered to be paradigmatic: Personal experience will remain, in my thinking, the starting point for theoretical reflection. I know the world only through my eyes, and all “objective” knowledge derives its meaning from being filtered through one’s experience. We may refine our experience, sharpen the tools for collecting information, combine, enrich and control what we know by what others know, yet our consciousness still remains the lens through which knowledge is collected.
