Superconductivity of Graphite Intercalation Compounds

Abstract

The superconductivity of graphite intercalation compounds was first reported by Hanney et al. [5.1], who observed the superconduction of the first-stage compounds of K, Rb, and Cs GICs, after an initial unsuccessful search by Henning and Meyer [5.2]. The highest transition temperature T c among the reported specimens was 0.55 K for the excess-intercalated GIC with potassium. Because neither graphite nor alkali metal is a superconducting material, the report by Hanney et al. attracted much interest, although subsequent investigations such as the paper by Poitrenaud [5.3], who searched in the temperature range down to 300 mK, failed to reproduce their work.
