Abstract
Schematically, the respiratory system can be considered to consist to two parts, the first one being the gas exchanging organ or the lung, and the second one the ventilatory pump [1]. Each of these parts can potentially fail and induce acute respiratory failure (ARF). The respiratory muscles are the engines of the ventilatory pump and their dysfunction represents a frequent cause of ventilatory failure. Diagnosing respiratory muscle dysfunction is important because it allows to recognize the patients at risk of developing either ARF or weaning failure from mechanical ventilation.
