Recent High-Field Investigations of Semiconductor Nanostructures and Other Systems at Nijmegen

Abstract

Some of the recent measurements carried out on semiconductor nanostructures using the far-infrared and high magnetic field facilities of the High Field Magnet Laboratory of the University of Nijmegen are reviewed. In addition, a brief summary of high field studies of other semiconductor systems is given.

The University of Nijmegen contains one of the world’s foremost magnet facilities. Two hybrid magnets give fields of 25 and 30 T, and a variety of Bitter solenoids are used to provide up to 20 T [1]. Part of the laboratory’s recent efforts have been directed towards magneto-transport and magneto-optics in semiconductor nanostructures. This work is supported by a European Community grant awarded jointly to the University of Nijmegen and the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, which seeks to combine the complementary facilities of both laboratories. In addition, the laboratory is involved in a collaboration with the Delft Institute for Microelectronics and Submicron Technology (DIMES) on the physics of very small Si devices. In this paper we shall attempt to give a flavour of some of the recent measurements carried out within these collaborations.
