Abstract

Ultrasonography is the only noninvasive method of approaching pregnancy in vivo. The absence of side effects, which is almost certain after 30 years of extensive use in humans, has made it an irreplaceable tool, to be used again and again. Recent advances in ultrasonography, including transvaginal sonography, have significantly improved our ability to investigate the first trimester of pregnancy. First trimester events which used to be described by embryologists can now be visualized in utero with a high degree of accuracy practically from the date of the missed period. The various aspects of normal embryonic development depicted by transvaginal ultrasonography have been recently and remarkably reviewed [1, 2]. Little attention has been paid to the uterine environment of the gestational sac and to the maternofetal interface which are the purpose of the present chapter.
