Abstract
The epidemiology and etiology of early pregnancy dysfunction (EPD) has been discussed in Chap. 15. From that discussion it becomes clear that early pregnancy dysfunction is not a homogenous group, but it encompasses a wide range of known and unknown etiologies. During the last decade, important investigations have been carried out in order to understand various aspects of human reproduction. New and effective regimens for inducing ovulation have been introduced, and pregnancies can now be achieved through assisted reproductive technologies. Recent data have shown that the “bottleneck” of these new technologies is the establishment of a successful pregnancy. Ovulation, fertilization, and embryo formation are achieved in most cases; however, implantation and pregnancy development are less frequently obtained. In spite of major advances in reproduction, prevention of early pregnancy complication and treatment in cases of early pregnancy dysfunction remain almost unexplored. Further-more, the subjects are actually considered as highly controversial.
