Abstract

We promised a discussion of the statistical assumptions entering the macroscopic description of matter. As our main example we worked out in great detail the derivation of the Boltzmann equation for a low density gas. Let us repeat then first on a non-technical level the main conclusion to be drawn from the results presented in Chap. 4.

  • Krylov (1979) discusses our issue at greater length. Lanford (1976) proves that the microcanonical prescription satisfies the conditions of Theorem 4.5. The symbolic dynamics representation of the tent map is standard (Arnold and Avez, 1968) Lanford (1978a) studies the symbolic dynamics of a more complicated map. A general introduction is (Devaney, 1986 ).

  • A delightful, nontechnical discussion of the distinction between past and future can be found in (Feynman, 1965). Weyl ( 1949, Part II, Chap. 3) and Penrose (1989) investigate the origin of the initial conditions.
