Summary
Successful enterprise-level CIM environments share electronic information among all aspect of the organization. The process is relatively straightforward and well defined in procurement and other business related segments. However technical data sharing for CAD/CAM/CIM often require movement of complex coordinate geometry among more convoluted paths. The most common method for geometry movement, the initial graphics exchange specification (IGES), is fraught with potential problems. This paper discusses the IGES translation in mixed platform/mixed system CAD/CAM/CIM environments and suggests alternatives.
