Abstract
Assembly has been an important part in any production environment. Automation of assembly has been a major research issue in the last couple of years to achieve accurate assembly. The gross manipulation can be controlled but the problem of fine motion is very complex to handle because there is always uncertainty exists the problem becomes more complicated. The analysis of a assembly can be done by use of features effectively.
Features are gaining prominence in manufacturing processes as a potential aid to link CAD and CAM. An assembly can be modelled by features which can represent the design intent of the process. In this paper the contact and geometric effects of features in assembly are analysed. Geometrical representations schemes for the features are presented. Different contact strategies are considered and an area optimization concept is also presented to optimize assembly.
