The combination of crop and animal husbandry has been the objective of a large number of experiments in an area where traditional practice has been to run the two enterprises parallel rather than in true combination. The idea of replacing hand cultivation by animal traction has always appealed to agronomists because the former is so unproductive. There is also the advantage that the farm reaps a profit from the animals by way of meat, milk and manure.
