Abstract

The German Cardiovascular Prevention Study (GCP) is a multicentre community-oriented investigation for the primary prevention of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke. The concepts and methods for this programme were developed during a pilot phase from 1979 to 1983, using experience obtained in completed, as well as ongoing, community-intervention studies in North Karelia, Finland (Puska et al. 1983), German- and French-speaking towns in Switzerland (Gutzwiller et al. 1985), Eberbach and Wiesloch, FRG (Nüssel 1985), and Pawtucket (Elder 1986), Minnesota (Blackburn et al. 1984) and cities in the Stanford area in the United States (Farquhar et al. 1985).

First published in European Heart Journal (1988) 9:1058–1066. This study is funded by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology and the Federal Ministry for Youth, Family, Women’s Affairs and Health (Federal Republic of Germany).
