Abstract

This survey of mortality among men employed for more than 6 months in any one of five factories producing Chromate pigments was started in 1976. The objective was to determine whether or not the mortality of exposed workers differed from that of comparable groups without this occupational exposure. The main aim of the study was to investigate the mortality from cancer of the respiratory tract, but all other causes of death were also evaluated. An increased risk of cancer of the upper respiratory tract from exposure to zinc and lead Chromate pigments has been described in earlier clinical reports and in epidemiological studies done by Langard and Norseth in Norway (1975), Gaffey in the USA (Equitable Environmental Health Inc. 1976), and Davies in Great Britain (1978, 1979). This study was designed to investigate the health effects of exposure to lead Chromate pigment, but the prevalent “mixed” production made it impossible to distinguish between persons exposed solely to lead Chromate pigment and those subjected in mixed zinc and lead exposures.
