Abstract

Cells endocytose plasma membrane components and molecules from their surroundings in at least two different ways: by clathrin coated pits and vesicles and by a mechanism which does not involve clathrin (van Deurs et al., 1989). Whereas our knowledge of clathrin-dependent endocytosis is considerable, studies of the clathrin-independent mechanism(s) have been hampered by lack of specific markers associated with the internalized membrane microdomain, such as transferrin receptors, which are selectively taken up from clathrin coated pits, or the clathrin molecule itself. An example of apparently clathrin-independent endocytosis of a specific membrane domain is the internalization of desmosomes seen, for example, in EGTA-treated epithelial cells (Kartenbeck et al., 1982).
