Abstract

Biologically important macromolecules bind to receptors on the plasma membrane and are internalized via coated vesicles and endosomes before delivery to lysosomes. Endosomes constitute the most important branchpoint in this receptor-mediated pathway, where sorting processes occur that determine the fate of receptors and ligands. So far, the only known mechanism underlying molecular sorting in endosomes is their slightly acidic internal pH due to the activity of a proton ATPase present in the endosomal membrane.
