Abstract
Cultivated tomato originated in the New World, while the Andean zone is likely to be the center of origin of wild tomato. However, the domestication of tomato took place in Mexico. The most likely ancestor of cultivated tomato is the cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme). According to Rick (1979a), species of Lycopersicon were evolved via gene substitution. This fact is based on the biosystematic studies of Lycopersicon and closely related species of Solanum.
