Emergent Themes in Statistical Expert Systems

Knowledge, Data and Computer-Assisted Decisions

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NATO ASI F,volume 61))

Summary

Research into statistical expert systems is relatively young, but old enough so that one can examine the progress that has been made. In this paper I compare achievements with requirements stated a few years ago. Certain themes are apparent in today’s work and some of these are explored in detail. In particular the following are addressed:

  • strategy: formalising the choices, actions, and decisions to be made in a statistical analysis

  • hypertext: a nonlinear high level knowledge representation which has been used in several systems

  • metadata: computer manipulable information supplementing the data.
