Zusammenfassung
Von den ersten Versuchen einer Organtransplantation am Menschen bis zur heutigen Transplantationsmedizin war es ein weiter Weg; der Zeitraum jedoch, in dem diese bedeutsame Entwicklung stattfand, war erstaunlich kurz: 1928 stellte Volhard, der Begründer der modernen Nephrologie, in einem Vortrag fest:
Der echten Urämie, d. h. der finalen Harnvergiftung, stehen wir heute noch machtlos gegenüber, wenn sie erst einmal ausgebrochen ist. Eine Abwendung des Schicksals ist noch nicht zu erwarten, solange es nicht gelingt, für die zugrunde gegangene Niere ein gesundes Organ zu verpflanzen (Pichlmayr 1986).
