Experiences with Interstitial Hyperthermia as a Sole Treatment Modality or Combined with Radiotherapy

  • Chapter
Interventional Radiation Therapy

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Radiat Oncol))

Abstract

Several clinical studies have revealed that a combination therapy of radiation and hyperthermia is more effective than radiation alone. Interstitial hyperthermia is an improvement over external hyperthermia, as interstitial radiation therapy is over external irradiation. However, interstitial irradiation is not always recommended to treat large tumors. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the effectiveness of interstitial microwave hyperthermia in combination with external radiation therapy for advanced large tumors.
