Abstract
In the treatment of the carcinoma of the cervix, high dose rate afterloading (HDR-AL) brachytherapy was started in Rotterdam in 1978. From the viewpoint of dosimetry high dose rate applications are preferable because the short application times allow for complete fixation of the applicator in combination with immobilization through spinal or epidural anesthesia. Stable geometrical conditions are obtained. Direct measurements in the bladder appear very difficult to realize. The main problem is to ensure that the probe is positioned at the area of the bladder base where late radiation reactions occur most frequently.
