Abstract
Cancer of the prostate is the second most common cancer in men in the USA, representing about 20% of all male cancer deaths (American Cancer Society 1988). The incidence of prostatic carcinoma increases significantly with age, involving about one-half of the male population over the age of 70 years. There are certain puzzling national and racial differences in the incidence of this cancer. It is extremely rare in oriental people, for instance, there are only 3.9 per 100 000 Japanese men and 3.7 per 100000 Chinese men in Hong Kong, as compared with an incidence of about 60 per 100 000 white and 95 per 100 000 black men in the USA.
