Abstract

The management of carcinoma of the anal canal has long been a subject of controversy between surgeons and radiation oncologists. During the past few years the view of most enterologists and surgeons has changed dramatically. Radical surgery as the initial treatment has been abandoned or questioned in most institutions (Boman et al. 1984; Parks 1981; Quan et al. 1978), and local excision is reserved for clinically benign lesions to be followed by irradiation if malignant tissue is found in the operative specimens.
