Abstract

When talking about anal carcinoma, it is necessary to distinguish between anal canal cancer (70%–80%) and anal margin cancer (20%–30%): The anal canal extends 3–5 cm from the rectum to the perianal skin. Its upper limit is the anorectal ring and the boundary between the rectal mucosa and the transitional epithelium. The lower limit is the junction to the perianal (hairy) skin, as defined by the UICC.
