Abstract
Brachytherapy is often indicated in the management of primary or recurrent carcinomas of the lip, oral cavity, and oropharynx. It offers the dual advantage over external beam therapy alone of significant sparing of the salivary glands and other peripheral cervicofacial tissues while delivering a high radiation dose to the tumor. Interstitial irradiation provides better functional and esthetic preservation than surgery in the great majority of situations in which both modalities offer the same cure rate. Brachytherapy also represents a highly effective alternative to radical surgery for patients with locally recurrent disease or who develop new primaries in previously irradiated areas. It is also occasionally indicated for associated neck disease, especially for recurrence after surgery and external irradiation.
