Abstract
A long time ago, in prehistoric times, people were already using natural glass produced by volcanic activity as arrowheads. In museums one can see glassware manufactured and used in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. But although amorphous solids have been used by people from ancient time it is relatively recently that amorphous metallic alloys have been available. The first report which appeared about 20 years ago in “Nature” was on an amorphous Au-Si alloy by Professor Paul Duwez at the California Institute of Technology. The first ferromagnetic amorphous alloy Fe75P15C10 was also produced by his group with a piston anvil method. In 1973 Dr. Chaudhari et al. at IBM reported that amorphous GdCo alloys prepared by sputtering showed ferrimagnetism.
